Frequently Asked Questions

Do you provide an evening meal?

No, we do not provide an evening meal as we are so close to Keswick town centre where there are numerous café’s, pubs and restaurants which cater for all tastes and budgets. In addition there are many village pubs where you can get a good quality meal at a reasonable price. You will be spoilt for choice.

Can our dog sleep in our bedroom or must they use the kennel?

Yes, your dog can sleep in your bedroom. You are the best judge of where your dog will feel most secure and settle best. The majority of our guests choose to have their dog with them in their room, some guests use a crate/cage, others leave their dog/s in the car but a small minority kennel their dog/s overnight as this is what they are used to.

Are dogs allowed in the dining room?

Yes dogs are allowed in the dining room if they would not settle anywhere else without you. If they do accompany you to breakfast we ask that they remain on a lead for reasons of safety and as a courtesy to other guests.

Are you walking distance from town?

Yes we are within walking distance of Keswick and many of our guests choose to walk down to town and walk or take the bus or a taxi back. There are several routes you can take which range from a direct 25 minute walk down the road to a leisurely stroll by through the fields and woodland. Another option is to go via Castlerigg stone circle and down into town from there. The more adventurous will make an outing of the trip by taking in a walk up Walla Cragg, a visit to Ashness bridge and a boat ride on Derwentwater – To quote a Taoist proverb - "The journey is the reward."

Are there nice walks locally?

We have many walks from our doorstep for all ages and abilities from a 20 minute stroll through the fields to the stone circle to a days walking in the mountains. We have so many nice walks in our immediate area that the first time many of our guests move their car is to make their journey home! The current record stands at using the car just one day during a 14 day stay.

How easy is it to get to the other Lakes and towns?

We are situated on the main route through the Lake district, the A591 which is surely  “Britain’s prettiest road”. We are also just 2 miles off the A66 with access to Ullswater and the quieter ‘Western Lakes’. We are happy to advise on scenic routes for car users or alternatively have details of public transport.

Grasmere - 11 miles

Ambleside - 14 miles

Windermere  - 19 miles

Ullswater  - 16 miles

Does it always rain in the Lake District?

Not always but we won’t deny that this is a risk. The price we pay for this uniquely beautiful landscape is that we have the ideal environment for the formation of cloud. Without clouds there would be no rain and consequently no Lake district.

What clothing do I need to pack?

Our advice would always be “dress in layers, bring waterproofs and boots and carry a rucksack”. Follow this simple guidance and you will be able to peel off or add layers as required. There is a local saying “there is no such thing as bad weather – just inappropriate clothing”

Do you provide drying facilities?

Yes we do provide drying facilities for those who get caught out. We are happy to run your lighter clothing through a tumble drier cycle and dry off coats and boots in our boiler room.

Where can I store my cycle/motorcycle?

We are happy to provide facilities for storage of bicycles which can be locked. We also provide an area where motorbikes can be stored under cover although this would not be locked.

We notice that you promote yourself as ‘dog friendly’ does that mean that there are lots of dogs running about the house?

We are indeed a dog friendly establishment with dogs welcome in all public areas however we encourage all owners to keep them on leads or under close control within the house. Our reputation is such that we expect to have dogs in residence at all times.

Do you provide packed lunches or somewhere where we can make a snack?

We do not currently have the man-power to provide a packed lunch service however we are quite unique in offering access to a utility/kitchen. This is available to guests who may wish to make sandwiches, warm up a take away meal, store goods in a fridge/freezer or make a light snack.

You also have an iron, ironing board, washing machine and tumble drier available however there will be a small charge for washing facilities.

Will we have to stay out all day?

You may come and go as you please throughout the day as long as you are aware that we need access for cleaning purposes between 10:30am and 2;30pm.

What time can we check in?

What time do we have to check out?

Many of our guests are keen to make the most of their time in the area therefore, unlike many establishments; we are flexible with arrival and departure. All we ask is that you accept us as you find us.

Should you arrive before your room has been vacated/cleaned we will store your luggage and move it into your room for you whilst you go out and enjoy the day.

We ask that rooms be vacated by 11am on day of departure but we will provide secure storage for your luggage for collection later in the day if required. There are toilet facilities which you may use prior to your journey home.
