Fast Route. -

From M6 J40 (Penrith) take the A66 towards Keswick. About two miles past Threlkeld and 14.3 miles (23km) from the M6 junction take the slip road signposted A591 Windermere. After 1/2 mile (900m), at the second T junction, turn left up the hill following the A591 towards Windermere. In 1 mile (1.7 km) you will be at the top of the hill and see some trees on the roadside on the left and a lane signposted to the Stone Circle. From here Low Nest is the second turning on the left, about 1/4 mile (400m) down the hill.

Scenic Route. (can be slow on bank holidays) -

From M6 J36 take the A590 towards Kendal then follow the A591 through Windermere and Ambleside towards Keswick. After Grasmere there is a long steep climb over Dunmail Raise followed by a descent to Thirlmere. After passing the Kings Head pub the road is fairly flat for 3.5 miles (including half a mile of dual-carriageway). After passing Dale Bottom Campsite you come to a right hand bend followed by a steepish climb. This hill is Nest Brow and Low Nest is the next turning on the right.

If using Satellite Navigation

Approaching from the north (Fast route - via A66 and Keswick), enter postcode CA12 4TF (Keswick - Naddle) as your destination.
Ignore any instructions to turn left with 3 miles to go onto the B5322. When your navigator shows 1 mile (1.6km) to go you will be on Nest Brow and Low Nest Farm will be on your left.

Alternatively enter town = Keswick, street = Nest Brow.
On reaching Nest Brow continue for half a mile until you see the Low Nest sign on the left.

If using Satellite Navigation

Approaching from the south, enter postcode CA12 4TE (Keswick - Castlerigg) as your destination. When your navigator shows 1 mile (1.6km) to go you will be on Nest Brow and Low Nest Farm will be on your right.

Alternatively enter town = Keswick, street = Nest Brow.
On reaching Nest Brow continue for a quarter mile up the hill until you see the Low Nest sign on the right.

From Keswick town centre -

Follow the A591 (Penrith Road) up the steep hill out of Keswick in the direction of Ambleside and Windermere.  At the top of the hill you will see some trees on the roadside on the left and a lane signposted to the Stone Circle. From here Low Nest is the second turning on the left, about 1/4 mile (400m) down the hill.

The problems with Sat. Nav.

If you rely  entirely on your navigation system to get you to CA12 4TF  (or our old postcode CA12 4TE) it will lead you astray for the last mile (for the last three or four miles in some cases when approaching 4TF from the east along the A66).

Both  postcodes cover several square miles of countryside. Most GPS maps arbitrarily place the centre of the 4TE postcode halfway up Castlerigg Lane and the centre of 4TF halfway along the lane to St John's in the Vale church (see map below). Neither of these positions are anywhere near Low Nest and, being up narrow lanes, are very inconvenient places to be in a car. Our new 4TF postcode will at least leave you in the right valley and in sight of Low Nest (on the hill opposite).

The moral is - Don't turn off the main road (A591) until you reach the 'Low Nest' sign
